Nutrition professionals have a unique opportunity to demonstrate how medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can help solve nutrition problems during breastfeeding. This session will provide up to date knowledge on trends related to breastfeeding in public health settings in the US and emerging nutrition care patterns and outcomes in dyads (lactating parent and infant). Attendees will walk away from this session with increased competency in best practices on how to systematically measure the impact of MNT in the practice area of lactation.
Learning Objectives
Describe state of the art knowledge on breastfeeding related health benefits and how nutrition professionals are providing lactation care in public health care settings.
Discuss successful Nutrition Care Process patterns reported in the Academy’s Breastfeeding Registry study.
Describe how to a) analyze nutrition care patterns and track related outcomes in breastfeeding and b) quantify the impact of medical nutrition therapy.

Alena Clark
Instructor,Colorado State University
Dr. Alena Clark is an Instructor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Before her position at Colorado State University, she was a Professor and the Co-Director of the Lactation Support Program at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified lactation counselor and is involved in many organizations that advocate the need to promote healthy lifestyles and support for parents, children, and infants. She has worked in various settings including hospitals, public health agencies and academia. She earned a Ph.D. in Human Nutrition at Colorado State University, an M.P.H. in Public Health Nutrition at the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in Nutrition and Dietetics at Concordia College. Her primary areas of research and practice are lactation support, global health, and pregnancy, infant and young child nutrition.
Allison Gaubert
Instructor of Dietetics,Nicholls State University
Allison Gaubert, MS, RDN, LDN, CLC is an Assistant Professor of Dietetics at Nicholls State University. She is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition student at the University of North Florida. Allison completed her M.S. in Nutrition and Wellness and Dietetic Internship at McNeese State University. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has served in various positions with the Baton Rouge Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Louisiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Constantina (Tina) Papoutsakis, PhD, RD is Senior Director, Nutrition and Dietetics Data Science Center of the Academy (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) that conducts nutrition care registry studies and other Academy research initiatives, including ANDHII (the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics health Informatics Infrastructure; a Nutrition Care Process (NCP) outcomes focused platform capable of big data aggregation). Dr. Papoutsakis chairs the SNOMED CT Clinical Reference Group on nutrition and dietetics and has overseen the development and integration of NCP Terminology (NCPT) in SNOMED CT. She is a member of the Coding4Food Advisory Committee that will develop ‘food is medicine’ HCPCS codes in the next 2 years. She chaired the Professional Practice Committee of EFAD (European Federation of Associations of Dietitians) and was a member of EFAD’s Executive Committee until November 2021. Dr. Papoutsakis has chaired the NCP International Workgroup of the Academy. She has led initiatives to monitor best practices among dietitians internationally with emphasis on the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology (NCP/T). Dr. Papoutsakis has lectured and organized workshops for health professionals and university students in several countries in Europe, Asia, and the US. She has taught university courses, worked as a clinical dietitian, served as a clinical and managerial expert of NIH funded cancer randomized clinical trials, and published widely on nutrition/dietetics topics. The emphasis of her research has been on the impact of nutrition in chronic disease outcomes. Seminal publications include updates of the NCP Model, NCP Terminology and validation of the NCP audit tool, the NCP-QUEST.
