Description

In this session, attendees will delve into the professional trajectories of Registered Dietitians Nutritionists (RDNs) and Nutrition and Dietetics Technicians, Registered (NDTRs) from three distinct sectors who have proactively championed their career advancement. Participants will gain practical knowledge on utilizing self-advocacy for opportunities like promotions and salary negotiations. The focus is on inspiring RDNs and NDTRs to aspire beyond their existing roles towards future leadership positions, fostering an environment of influence and transformative change. The session also seeks to empower RDNs and NDTRs to actively shape their career paths by offering invaluable strategies, tools, and resources. These encompass self-advocacy, locating meaningful mentors and supporters, and effectively conveying their professional value.

    Aurora Calvillo Buffington

    Chief, SNAP Nutrition Education Branch, SNAP/Food and Nutrition Service/USDA

    Dr. Aurora Calvillo Buffington is the Branch Chief for the Nutrition Education Branch in the SNAP Program Administration and Nutrition Division. Dr. Calvillo Buffington is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with over 15 years of experience of providing nutrition education in the community as well as the public health, academic, and health care related sectors. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has held numerous leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels for professional and grassroots organizations. Dr. Calvillo Buffington holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health, a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology, and a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Aurora is a veteran of the Armed Forces having served for 10 years in the Air Force. In her spare time, Aurora enjoys leading fitness classes, cooking, traveling and entertaining friends and family.

    Sylvia is a global nutrition communicator, award-winning author, nutrition and culinary consultant, and the founder of Hispanic Food Communications. Sylvia is an internationally recognized nutrition expert who is relentlessly passionate about helping people fall in love with creating and enjoying delicious and nutritious foods. Her most recent global nutrition project in Africa is fulfilling one of her aspirations by developing a sustainable community nutrition program to help improve the nutritional health status of malnourished children. In October 2022, Loma Linda University awarded her Woman of the Year award for her compassionate work with underserved communities.

    Sara Perrone

    System Director of Clinical Nutrition , Christus Health System |Morrison Healthcare

    Sara has held a career as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for 25 years and is the System Director of Clinical Nutrition at Christus Health System with Morrison Healthcare. She holds a masters degree in Nutrition from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX. A love for learning and giving back, Sara has served in numerous leadership roles at both the local, state and national levels, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (TAND), Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition (LAHIDAN) and the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition (HEN) Dietetic Practice Group. She currently serves as the Treasurer-elect for the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and the IDEA Liaison for the HEN DPG. Sara is a 2022 graduate of the Academy Leadership Institute, has held specialty certifications including Board Certified Specialization in Pediatric Nutrition (CSP) and has provided expert advice as content writer for the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Specialty Exam in Pediatrics. She has completed the Child and Adolescent Weight Management certification; and in 2019 received the Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND) designation recognizing her commitment to the field of nutrition and dietetics.

    Iliana Guerra Martinez

    Executive Educator, Novo Nordisk

    Iliana Guerra Martinez is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialists working as a Cardiometabolic Educator for Novo Nordisk. Iliana received her BS in Dietetetics from the University of Texas Pan American and MS in Health Care Administration from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Iliana currently serves as the Chair for LAHIDAN and is a recent graduate of the 2023 Leadership Institute. Other current leadership roles include serving as a Board member for the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association, ADCES Advocacy Committee and Hispanics & Latinos in Novo Nordisk. She has also served in various capacities in the Texas Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, South Region TAND and LAHIDAN.
