From Gene to Team: Emerging Trends of Individualizing Dietary Supplement Recommendations for Athletic Performance

Description

This session will guide participants through the research evidence and professional experiences of a diverse set of practitioners who are experts in the use of dietary supplements with athletes. A pharmaceutical PhD researcher will explain the mechanisms of action of dietary supplements at the cellular level illustrated by the example of commonly used supplements and a deeper dive into omega-3 fatty acid supplements. A PharmD practitioner with expertise in nutrigenomics will take a deep and applied dive into precision nutrition. Finally, a sports dietitian with extensive experience working in professional sport will teach participants how to apply the scientific evidence to nuanced supplement management scenarios for athletes and teams using case-based discussions. This session will address the benefits and risks of dietary supplement use in performance settings and will equip clinicians with technology-based tools and professional skills in decision-making, clinical care, and communication.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the mechanisms and interactions of specific dietary supplements in the body to plan appropriate nutrition recommendations for athletes.
  • Investigate emerging trends in dietary supplements, the role of interdisciplinary team members, and risks of supplement use by athletes and evaluate their potential for use.
  • Synthesize and apply emerging evidence on dietary supplements to athlete case-study scenarios, and formulate plans of treatment that evaluate benefits while minimizing risks.

    Jessica Beal-Stahl

    Clinical Sports Pharmacy and Wellness Pharmacist, The Athlete's Pharmacist

    Jessica Beal-Stahl, PharmD, founded The Athlete’s Pharmacist, where she practices as a clinical sports pharmacist consulting with athletes, teams, and organizations. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University in 2009. She has also been practicing at an independent community pharmacy, Hobbs Pharmacy, where she serves as Director of Clinical Services, focusing on wellness, hormones, and genetics. Dr. Beal-Stahl’s passion lies in helping athletes bridge the gap between conventional medicine and integrative/functional medicine, Using skills and knowledge to improve and optimize sports and human performance by looking at all pieces of the athlete, from nutrition, sleep, mindset, supplements, medications, and recovery. Jessica knows what it’s like to be a high-level athlete; played D-1 volleyball, medaled nationally and internationally in Olympic Weightlifting, and at 41 years old, set a world record in Olympic Weightlifting for snatch in her age group/weight class and recently placed 3rd in the Master's World Championship. She is involved in growing sports pharmacy and serves on the Sports Pharmacy Network, the US Sports Pharmacy Group advisory board, and the Who We Play For’s Medical board. She also has additional certifications in Integrative Medicine, Compounding and Sterile Compounding, Women’s Hormones, Nutrigenomics, Olympic Weightlifting Coach, and Sports Nutrition certificates.

    Susie Parker-Simmons

    Director of Sports Nutrition & Recovery Services, Milwaukee Bucks

    Susie Parker-Simmons is an Australian Sport Dietitian and Physiologist with a 30-year history of working in elite sport. Her career has encompassed work in the Olympic Movement, Professional Sports and within the University system in both Australia and United States of America. Susie has worked at seven Olympic Games, including both summer and winter Olympic Games, a Paralympic Game and she has a NBA Championship. During her career Susie has also worked as the Head of Sport Science at Victoria Institute of Sport and High-Performance Director of Winter Sports at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. Since 2005 Susie has also been the nutrition consultant for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and has been President of the PINES – Professionals in Nutrition for Exercise and Sport. She is presently Director of Sports Nutrition and Recovery Services with the Milwaukee Bucks.

    Principal Scientist, University of Mississippi, The National Center for Natural Products Research

    Ryan Yates is a Principal Scientist at the National Center for Natural Products who focuses on discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative natural product health and wellness solutions. As a pharmacist scientist entrepreneur, Ryan believes that the key to human health lies in our ability to unlock nature’s secrets using sustainable agricultural practices that protect and promote the health of our planet. In 2019, Ryan retired from the UTHSC College of Pharmacy as a tenured full professor where he published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and was awarded numerous patents in fields ranging from molecular genotyping to pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. One of his current passion projects is building a specialty crop ecosystem comprising natural product industry stakeholders, farmers, basic and applied researchers, and ecosystem services companies. Ryan is a licensed pharmacist who obtained his Pharm.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the UTHSC Colleges of Pharmacy and Graduate Health Sciences. As a life sciences entrepreneur he has founded numerous startup companies including most recently SPRP, LLC (CR Yates Apothecary), which has patented a unique dietary supplement targeting a key metabolic pathway in the liver responsible for, among other things, clearing ectopic fat.

    Casey Thomas

    Director of Professional Development, SHPN

    Casey spent five years working in clinical research before deciding to return to school to become a registered dietitian. He spearheaded the development of a sports nutrition program on campus and completed a thesis project examining cognitive supplements in elite athletes. He is a published scientific author who regularly engages as an expert peer reviewer, and has been featured in media outlets for interviews about his nutrition strategies. Casey currently works as a performance dietitian, writer, and instructor. His unique research background has allowed him to implement protocols that have facilitated significant improvements in body composition, health, and performance among athletes – assisting several teams to championship victories at the D1 collegiate level. He has similarly enjoyed consulting for professional athletes and Olympians, esports programs, universities, and businesses looking to gain a performance edge. Casey is currently focusing his efforts on esports, where he is working to bring high-level, research-backed performance nutrition to the gaming world.
