Academy CEO Wylecia Wiggs Harris will kick off the session with remarks focused on the Academy’s ongoing change journey and how keeping an eye to the future will help the organization overcome challenges and move forward with a powerful transformation that will elevate the profession and the Academy for years to come. Do not miss this opportunity to learn about the essential roles that leadership, collaboration and unity play in this transformation. Plus hear key updates on specific upcoming programs, campaigns and other exciting developments.

Following Wylecia’s remarks, Ambassador Ertharin Cousin will take the stage to delve into her over 40 years of experience addressing global food insecurity issues caused by conflict, climate change, and food deserts. Through her organization, Food Systems for the Future, she has pioneered innovative solutions to improve nutrition outcomes in underserved and low-income communities, emphasizing sustainable infrastructures that foster self-sufficiency.

This session aims to empower attendees to make a meaningful impact on hunger and food security by exploring several key themes: innovative approaches to food security, strategies for enhancing nutrition outcomes through sustainable food and agriculture, and the impactful role RDNs and NDTRs can have in building resilient food systems and supporting vulnerable communities. It will draw lessons from global hunger initiatives and apply them to local and national contexts, emphasizing the role of leadership in driving change and the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Attendees will gain valuable insights into leveraging their expertise to make a tangible impact on the lives of those they serve. This session will not be recorded.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the key challenges and opportunities related to food security and describe how these insights can inform your approach to community outreach or nutrition education.
  • Explain the roles that RDNs and NDTRs can play in addressing food insecurity, and outline specific actions you can take to contribute to these efforts in your own practice or community.
  • Identify and describe two specific innovative solutions to food security and discuss their potential applications in local or national food systems.

    Ertharin Cousin

    Food Systems for the Future, Founder and CEO | Former US Ambassador, United Nations | Former Executive Director, World Food Programme

    Ertharin Cousin currently serves as the CEO and Managing Director of Food Systems for the Future, a nutrition impact investment fund; a Distinguished Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs; a Bosch Academy, Robert Weizsäcker Fellow; and a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University, Center on Food Security and Environment. From 2012 until 2017, Cousin led the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). As Executive Director, Cousin guided the 14,000- member WFP team feeding more than 80 million people each year. In 2009, Cousin was nominated and confirmed as the US Ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome. Prior to her global hunger work, Cousin helped lead the U.S. domestic fight to end hunger including service as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of America’s Second Harvest - now Feeding America.

    Wylecia Wiggs Harris has oversight of all entities in the Academy Enterprise, including the Association, the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, and the Academy Foundation. A graduate of Wittenberg University, she earned a Master of Management degree in marketing, health services management and business policy from Northwestern University and a doctorate in organizational management and leadership from Capella University.
