Join us for an enlightening presentation on the crucial role nutrition plays in maintaining strong and healthy bones throughout every stage of life. This session brings three experts who will cover the life continuum, infancy through aging adults. We will delve into the latest research and evidence-based practices. From the importance of calcium, vitamin D, and other key nutrients to emerging trends and therapeutic approaches. From childhood to adulthood and beyond, learn how nutrition interventions impact bone density, strength, and resilience. Expand your toolkit and discover practice applications and strategies to address a variety of medical conditions and across the lifespan.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe nutritional needs of newborns, particularly in cases of metabolic bone disease associated with premature birth and discuss methods to enhance nutrient intake to promote bone health.
  • Identify two instances of how bone development in children influences their susceptibility to osteoporosis later in life.
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines for preventing and treating osteoporosis in adults, and effectively communicate scientific concepts in a clear, patient-friendly manner.

    Kate Beard

    NICU Dietitian & Milk Lab Program Manager, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health

    Kate Beard is a Registered Dietitian at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis where she works as the Milk Lab Program Manager and Senior Neonatal Clinical Dietitian. Kate is board certified in Pediatric Critical Care Nutrition and completed her Dietetic Internship and Master of Arts in Nutrition and Dietetics from Ball State University. She provides medical nutrition therapy for infants in a level IV NICU and supports the milk lab through recipe development and safety quality assurance. Kate also precepts dietetic interns, neonatology fellows, and nurse practitioner candidates on neonatal nutrition at Riley. She is passionate about advocating for dietitians to be involved in clinical practice change, with personal interest in metabolic bone disease of prematurity, human milk analysis, and growth. Kate has presented abstracts at the Pediatric Academic Society, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), FNCE, and was recently awarded the Margaret Dullea Simko Award for Excellence at a Clinical Poster Session at FNCE 2022. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Dietitians in Nutrition Support Practice Group, ASPEN, a 2023 Leadership Institute graduate, and serves on the boards of the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group and Indiana AND state affiliate.

    Jackie Klunk

    Lead Dietitian, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside

    Jackie Klunk is an outpatient dietitian with the UPMC Presbyterian Outpatient Nutrition Services team. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016, followed by her Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Pittsburgh in 2018. She has worked at UPMC Presbyterian for six years, starting in an inpatient role working with patients in a floating coverage role on all units across the hospital campus. She has worked the last four years in the outpatient setting, counseling patients in the UPMC Benedum Geriatrics Center, Adult Spina Bifida Clinic, ALS Clinic, and the UPMC Presbyterian general outpatient nutrition counseling office. She also works with patients in the heart, lung, kidney, and liver transplant clinics and the pulmonary rehab clinic as needed. She serves as her department's Quality Improvement (QI) Team Lead and has an interest in nutrition informatics and ways to make using the EHR more efficient and effective for clinicians. She strongly values providing care from a compassionate perspective to help others achieve their long-term goals for health and well-being, both physically and mentally.

    Halley Wasserman

    Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

    Dr. Halley Wasserman is a pediatric endocrinologist and Medical Director of the Metabolic Bone Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where the mission is to provide comprehensive care to children and young adults with skeletal fragility and/or disorders of bone metabolism. She is also the Scientific Advisor for the Bionutrition Core in the Schubert Research Center, overseeing dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed topography (pQCT) scans for measurement of bone mineral density in clinical care and research purposes. She is on the pediatric faculty for the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and is co-chair of the Pediatric Endocrine Society Bone Special Interest Group. Her research focuses on disorders of bone mineralization, pediatric osteoporosis and puberty disorders aiming to understand the modifiable risk factors for fragility fractures in pediatric patients and optimize bone mass accrual during the pediatric years. She has authored over 15 peer reviewed manuscripts related to bone density. She strongly values a multidisciplinary approach to research and clinical care recognizing the importance of different perspectives to solving clinical challenges and providing the best patient care.

    Anna Busenburg

    NICU Dietitian, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

    Anna has been a Registered Dietitian since 2011and have had the opportunity to work in the hospital setting as well as private practice. Anna specializes in pediatric nutrition and specifically neonatal nutrition working in a Level IV NICU at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She has covered inpatient NICU and outpatient NICU follow up clinic patients. She has undertaken many projects over the years to help improve patient care and cultivate a culture to support nutrition education. She has worked on projects that affected her unit specifically and then larger policy changing projects affecting an entire hospital system. Anna is a Certified Specialist in Pediatrics and has completed the Pediatric Weight Management course. She has had the opportunity to author a chapter of the book The Nutrition Communications Guide from AND published in 2020, poster presentation at FNCE in 2023 and published two articles in the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group in 2019 and 2024. She currently serves on multiple committees for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics including Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group and the Committee for Lifelong Learning and has held various positions on the state and local level.
