July 19, 2023 – Today, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is joining the Association of SNAP Nutrition Education Administrators, in cooperation with the offices of U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (Penn.) and U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson (PA-15), to lead a congressional briefing that highlights the importance of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education.
Academy President Lauri Wright, PhD, RDN, LDN, FAND, will represent the nutrition and dietetics profession during the event, emphasizing the need for the next Farm Bill to include adequate funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and SNAP-Ed. The Academy is advocating for the 118th U.S. Congress to pass a Farm Bill that maintains the integrity of nutrition assistance programs, ensures vital funding for nutrition education and nutrition research, and improves marketplace demand and equitable access to nourishing foods.
SNAP-Ed is instrumental in advancing food and nutrition security in underserved communities across the country. Known as the nutrition education and promotion area of SNAP, SNAP-Ed is an evidence-based program that helps participants learn how to stretch their benefits, and teaches participants how to shop for and cook healthy meals while also leading a physically active lifestyle. The program partners with organizations at both the state and local levels to serve communities through a variety of offerings, including nutrition education classes, social media marketing campaigns and efforts to improve community policies, systems and environment.
Academy members interested in adding their support to Farm Bill advocacy efforts are encouraged to join the monthly Nutrition Security Affinity Group meeting.
