On March 19, 2025, Governor Kelly Armstrong signed the Dietitian Licensure Compact into law, making North Dakota the sixth state to enact this legislation. This milestone advances efforts to expand access to medical nutrition therapy and improve licensure mobility across state lines. The legislation was championed by the North Dakota Military Commission, with collaboration from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the North Dakota affiliate. These collective efforts reflect a steadfast commitment to enhancing licensure flexibility and ensuring greater access to qualified nutrition care.
Lieutenant Colonel Jay Sheldon of the North Dakota National Guard testified on behalf of the Military Commission stating, "In line with North Dakota's longstanding commitment to military families, adopting this compact demonstrates strong support for our military community by reducing unnecessary barriers for spouses who wish to contribute their skills. It is a tangible way for our state to show that we value their service and are committed to helping them build meaningful careers here in North Dakota."
The momentum continues. With just one more state needed, the compact is on the verge of reaching the threshold to form the Compact Commission and begin the operationalization process.
As part of the Academy's national compact advocacy strategy, 22 states have introduced Dietitian Licensure Compact bills during the 2025 legislative session.
The Academy commends North Dakota's policy leaders for their dedication to advancing this legislation and recognizes their efforts in driving this positive outcome for both the state and the dietetics profession nationwide.
