Academy Statement on New Health and Human Services Leadership

February 13, 2025 – Harlivleen "Livleen" Gill, MBA, RDN, LDN, FAND, President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, released the following statement on today's confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

"The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a nonpartisan organization, stands ready to collaborate with Secretary Kennedy and his team to elevate nutrition in public health policy and to ensure that the voices of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are included in guiding a healthier future for our nation.

We are hopeful that the new Administration will recognize the vital role of RDNs in shaping and implementing effective policies to address America’s nutrition related issues. RDNs are uniquely qualified to provide evidence-based insights into nutrition science and its practical applications to improve individual and public health. Their expertise ensures that policies address immediate food and nutrition challenges while also creating long-term solutions to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities they serve. By including RDNs in policy development and execution, the government can leverage their knowledge to create programs that aim to tackle critical issues like chronic disease prevention, nutrition security, malnutrition and the promotion of healthy eating habits.

As we confront a multitude of health issues in this country, the perspective of RDNs will be invaluable in creating solutions that benefit health nationwide. RDNs have always possessed critical expertise, but they have not always been given a seat at the table. It is time for them to become key players in conversations about U.S. food, nutrition and health.

The Academy looks forward to working on any efforts intended to improve public health, advance nutrition security, promote sustainable agriculture and enhance access to nutritious, affordable foods for all Americans."
