The National Institutes of Health Office of Nutrition Research will hold a five-day virtual workshop, the Malnutrition in Clinical Settings: Research Gaps and Opportunities Workshop, to address research gaps and opportunities related to malnutrition in clinical settings.
Dates
September 12-14 (Focusing on Adult Patients)
September 19-20 (Focusing on Early Life Patients)
Time
noon to 5 p.m. (Eastern time)
An Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality systematic review on "Malnutrition In Hospitalized Adults" found that individuals who have malnutrition experience more hospital acquired complications, and have higher mortality rates compared to well-nourished patients. AHRQ defined malnourishment as varying degrees of overnutrition or undernutrition and included participants with many different disease and health states in a clinical setting. AHRQ identified the need for future research that addresses the effectiveness of various measurement tools for malnutrition on clinical outcomes and hospital-initiated malnutrition interventions to decrease mortality and improve quality of life.
This workshop—which the Academy assisted in planning—will:
- Summarize the state of the science and identify knowledge gaps related to disease-related malnutrition and other forms of malnutrition that might interfere with treatment outcomes in clinical settings in the U.S.
- Suggest innovative research strategies that could help identify individuals that are (or will become) malnourished in a variety of clinical settings and disease states.
- Examine research to understand, measure, and address malnutrition in clinical settings considering access to health care services and special populations to promote health equity.
- Suggest opportunities to train the next generation of nutrition researchers addressing malnutrition.
- Summarize the state of the science and identify knowledge gaps related to clinical malnutrition in the U.S. in pediatrics from infant to teenager, including related maternal/family topics.
